Two pioneering brands, Adidas and Allbirds have collaborated on a fascinating debut product namely, the FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT. Designed under FUTURECRAFT, Adidas and its innovative division aiming to shape the future of the sport; FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT is an absolute running shoe built with a 2.94kg CO2 carbon footprint which is a common personal best for both the brands. An alternative method was used by Adidas and Allbirds for manufacturing to reduce the emissions by 63%.
“Our partnership with Allbirds is a beacon of what can happen in the same industry, see the possibilities in coming together to design”, quotes Brian Grevy, Executive Board Member Global Brands at Adidas. “By truly co-creating and providing each other with open access to knowledge and resources – such as Allbirds’ knowledge of carbon calculation and experience with natural materials and Adidas’ capabilities in manufacturing and performance footwear – this is a call-to-action for other brands and a milestone in the sports industry achieving carbon neutrality”, he adds.
Adidas and Allbirds cohered to the concept of ‘less is more’ during the design process of FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT and using whatever is an absolute necessity to deliver the best performance results. Signature technologies of both brands, the shoe is based on Adidas Lightstrike reimagined with Allbirds’ sugarcane- based SweetFoam which results in low carbon natural component.
The upper is also a result of material amalgamation, crafted with 70 percent recycled polyester and 30 percent natural Tencel – a material made from wood pulp – accumulating to result in a lightweight upper that delivers the performance as well as reduce carbon impact.
Jamie McLellan, Head of Design at Allbirds says “Both the upper and the outside construction are inspired by the Tangram Principle, with all individual parts in their entirety achieving as little scrap as possible in production in order to reduce waste”.
Following this, it’s revealed that only 100 pairs of FUTURECRAFT.FOOTPRINT will be released to Adidas Creators Club this month and a lined up FW21 launch of 10,000 pairs and a wider release in SS22.
