Jaden Smith and New Balance Create the First-Ever Surplus Material 574
We all saw Jaden Smith stepping into the world of collaborative footwear in July 2020 with his New Balance Vision Racer. The duo has once again come together, creating a fresh take on the 574. The following collaboration will be Smith’s and NB’s first non-vision Racer footwear collaboration. Staying true to the sustainable ethos they’ve established a surplus material construction.
Just like the Vision Racer “Surplus”, none of the two pairs of the “Jaden 574” are precisely the same. Each of them has a bricolage-style gathering of colorful mesh and suede pieces making a pinned-together look having imperfectly sized mudguards, heel counters with overlays cut foam collars. To summarize, each “Jaden 574” looks more like a DIY art project given a life. From a purely material point of view, the upper portion is of 73% surplus materials with 9% recycled content and 18% virgin materials. The trim midsoles are the most basic part of the shoe which is made from New Balance’s signature EVA foam.
The Jaden Smith X New Balance “Jaden 574” will be dropping on September 17 exclusively on the New Balance website for a retail price of $120 USD.
